Top Facebook Pages: Why Facebook is the Most Important Social Media for Job Seekers

From now on when you go to a job interview you should openly offer to make it known that you have embraced social media in your quest for a new job; that includes Facebook too.
This wise move on your part will clearly show the Recruiter or Hiring Manager one of two things or both; a) you are using new age technology to your advantage over the next Job Seeker who may not be which could become very appealing and even a difference maker in that employer’s eyes or b) you are well aware that if the company is even close to considering you for employment they will do their homework on you and more than likely see what can be uncovered via Facebook; this could be a judgment to your character and show that you have nothing to conceal if you make the first move.
Trust us; this happens every minute during regular business hours in America.
While Facebook has yet to be embraced by HR Departments across the globe as a go-to resource in their background check or screening process, it’s already been implemented into hundreds – if not thousands – of company handbooks across the U.S. alone.
Companies are well aware that a good percentage of their own employee’s are actively involved on the world’s most utilized social networking website and to that point monitor their behavior and representation via the web. Facebook makes it seamless for your employer to drop in on your unnoticed via the web because after all on your profile is asks you where you work – surprise!
Bottom line, many companies today have the right to terminate you if you post content that is publicly accessible and deemed out of character inappropriate whether conducted at work or outside of work; when you are asked to sign and acknowledge receipt of your company handbook every January you probably don’t catch the fact that you are a direct representative of your company at all times; on the clock or not.
When you are looking for work it’s no different, the only catch here is that a company has the right to turn to another candidate and dismiss you from the recruitment process altogether. You may not even notice this. So bottom line, do not let this be you on Facebook (click here)
This often comes up in various discussions and debates; people expect privacy because Facebook is viewed clearly as a personal social networking site. Not true at all. When you are using Web 2.0; which is open source person-to-person communication DO NOT expect any of your activity to be private or only between you and the other end user. Please don’t fall into this mind trap; you will get burned at some point.
We tell seekers all of the time to monitor your own content and the content that may be posted on your page by others, what may seem very innocent to you may not in the eye of the beholder. While you may use Facebook exclusively in your personal life, and LinkedIn for professional, it is still directly and and indirectly associated with you and your job search.
Facebook is what we compared to the “golf course” of social media. It’s a resource where you can grease the wheels so to speak and still conduct business if need be. After all, your purpose for using social media as a career professional should be to establish and build relationships. Traditionally where is the best place to do this? The golf course, the hotel bar and lounge at a conference – it’s where professionals can let loose and interact on a more casual level.
