The Morning Blend: Each Day Is A Gift!

Last week in The Blend we talked about creating realistic expectations for upcoming job fairs and what you could hope to gain from attending one. This info is very practical and useful and I hope it helps you or someone you know get the most out of your next job fair or career expo.
However, today I want to go down a slightly different path in helping you prepare for your next job fair experience. Really, I hope that I can help you change both emotionally and mentally as you prepare not only for attending a career expo, but in how to approach your job search overall.
I was blessed to have been asked to be the emcee/host of an amazing event this past Friday night in Ponte Vedra, FL. It was called “A Black and White Celebration of Health & Life” and it was a fund raiser for a wonderful local store called “In The Pink”. This store serves women who have dealt with and are recovering from the effects of breast cancer. I have to tell you, I have never met more inspiring, strong, faithful, and absolutely joyous people in my entire life.
The keynote speaker was a fantastic lady named Sherry from Savannah, GA. Sherry was helping her mother deal with breast cancer when she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of the same disease herself. She chose to do a radical double mastectomy and said she learned more about herself and her inner strengths than she ever realized before. Her husband did not support the radical procedure and the two eventually divorced. She said that she believed her cancer was a gift – a gift! – And that without the disease in her life she would not have become the person she is today. She doesn’t regret the experience; in fact she said she’d go through it again knowing how much can be gained from such a challenge.
She was not the only inspirational person there – in fact, almost everyone there had a story that made me smile and feel humble for the good things in my life. There were also Wounded Warriors in attendance – a different kind of survivors. These guys had lost various body parts in Desert Storm and in Iraq, but not one of them regretted their service to our country. Each of them said they would do it again if they were given the chance.
I was awestruck at the unbridled joy that these folks exhibited. Many of them had looked into the abyss and not only survived, but learned how fragile and fleeting life really is. From that glimpse, each of them found a way to see each new as precious, meaningful, and a reason to celebrate. If you have seen any of the VOWELS events live, you know that I have on the wall in my master bathroom a plaque that says “Each Day Is A Gift” – the people I met last Friday are the physical embodiment of this phrase. They gobble up life like a chocolate cake at a birthday party! They share their joy with those around them, and they truly believe that their experiences – no matter how difficult or horrific – were positive influences in their lives!
As you go through your job search, do me a favor – look at this time in your life as an opportunity, not a setback. Look at the glass as half full. You have been given a truly wonderful chance to find go out and find your perfect job – your vocation. Approach each day with a sense of wonder, awe, and joy because you are that much closer to your new opportunity!
If I can help you to walk the path toward your perfect job – and to keep your head and heart in the right place during the journey! – don’t hesitate to ask.
Sincerely,
Brad Raney
